I Was Here

There is a disputed region on the Eastern coast of the Black Sea, called Abkhazia. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the national civil war that resulted when the region seceded from Georgia, this subtropical seaside resort disappeared once and for all. In the past 25 years, a new generation was born in the country that remains in ruins and tries to build a national identity.

The objective of the project «I Was Here» was to give Georgians and Abkhazians that still coexist together an opportunity to break the silence about the past they used to live side by side and to expose the only thing they still have in common - the loss.

Documenting life in the region Olga collected archival images donated by protagonists of her stories. Olga blended rephotographed portraits of war victims with the landscape photos of places where they were killed or last seen. This impressionistic imagery was exhibited together with archives.

During two months long exhibition in 2015 in the capital of Abkhazia (Sukhum) the archival part of the collection was tripled and donated to the local historical museum. Both Abkhazian and Georgian visitors came to the exposition with images and stories about the loved ones who died, disappeared or were murdered in 1992-1993 and in after-war years.
